THE HUNGER GAMES
The film I will be reviewing is on Hunger Games. The country is called Panem located in North America and it is divided into districts. It takes place in the future after the war and disasters had happened. Since The Capitol won the war over all the districts, they have an event every year as a reminder. Every district will have two people who represent their regions, (a boy/a girl) and they will be chosen to train and fight, kill each other and try to survive. Katniss Everdeen is the main actress; she lives in District 12 which can be defined as a poor coal-mining district. In this movie, you will see a lot of segregation between the rich and the poor. Citizens in District 12 wear simple apparels similar to the 40’s and 50’s. All the women wears dresses with braided or hair updo’s and the men wears simple collared shirt tucked in their pants. The day of the drawing of choosing two people that will represent their district, Katniss’s younger sister was chosen. However she volunteered in place of her and Peeta Mellark, the boy chosen to be Katniss’s partner. And from there on, they are trained for the battle of their lives.
Before I watched this movie, I had a different visual of how the setting would be due to so many comments from friends who’ve seen it already. Also the fact that I haven’t read the book either. So I pictured a futuristic theme, just like any movies that takes place in the future, having tall skyscrapers and wearing tight leather/spandex clothing. What I found fascinating about this film was how they were dressed because although the time setting is in the future, their fashion seem to be going backward. As I mentioned, District 12’s apparel is more like the 40’s/50’s where The Capitol’s apparel is like the early 1900’s with the puffy arm sleeves and silhouettes (like the bell shape, hour glass shape). The way rich people wore their make-up was just very interesting to me with the bright colors and colored eyebrows.
For my final inspiration garment, I would like to create something that represents Katniss Everdeen. I loved her strong personality yet caring character. I was inspired by the outfits she wore but more inspired by her character she represented. Her dark-sequenced suited apparel she came out in during her opening act was a really beautiful piece. I loved the style of the suit, it really showed her toughness. And as for her red gown she wore for her first interview, the idea behind that gown will be my inspiration for my final garment.
